Sydney Harbour, Sydney, NSW


Sydney is one of the world's great dining destinations. You can dine by the harbour in five-star style, enjoy a traditional pub bursting with history or find sublime Sydney views at a cool rooftop bar. In between discovering the best food and wine experiences in Sydney, explore the Harbour, beaches and inner-city precincts of this exuberant city or travel further afield to the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains wilderness area.


Day 1

The Rocks, Sydney, NSW

Upon arrival in Sydney check into The Four Seasons Hotel located in the historic Rocks precinct adjacent to Circular Quay and Sydney Harbour. Today, take a walk around The Rocks, visit the Museum of Contemporary Art café overlooking the harbour and take a ferry across the harbour to Taronga Zoo. The 13-minute ferry ride will take you past the Sydney Opera House before arriving at Taronga Zoo wharf. Take a cable car up to the zoo, where you will find Australian native animals including koalas and kangaroos, and enjoy expansive city and harbour views.

Take the ferry back to Circular Quay and treat yourself with dinner at Rockpool. One of Australia's most famous chefs, Neil Perry, presides over numerous restaurants across the country but his flagship, Rockpool, remains the jewel in the crown. Nearly 25 years on, Rockpool is one of Sydney's finest high-end dining experiences. Perry and his team cook Australian food inspired by Australia's greatest culinary influences - migration and superb local produce. 


Day 2

Following breakfast at Four Seasons, walk around the perimetre of Circular Quay to the Sydney Opera House, where a guided tour can take you behind the scenes of this iconic landmark. Continue walking around the bay to the Botanic Gardens, where you can have a picnic lunch on the grass overlooking the harbour - the Gardens’ kiosk has picnic food, or have lunch in the Gardens restaurant. After lunch, follow the signs through the garden to The Art Gallery of New South Wales where you'll find an Indigenous gallery, as well as rooms filled with the works of famous Australian painters including Brett Whiteley and Sir Arthur Streeton depicting Australian landscapes.

Continue walking along Art Gallery Road past The Domain, to St Mary's Cathedral - Sydney's largest - and across the road to Hyde Park. A five-minute stroll through the park will bring you to David Jones department store with its extensive food hall and Pitt Street Mall for some shopping, and Westfield's Centrepoint Tower, which has a viewing platform with vistas stretching as far as the Blue Mountains on a clear day. A 20-minute walk down George Street, towards Circular Quay, will return you to the Four Seasons.

Tonight, catch the Manly Ferry to one of Sydney’s newer restaurants, the lively waterside Papi Chulo for some classic South American fare. Meat lovers won’t get enough of the barbecued meat platter, marinated and cooked over wood. There are also ceviche and empanadas, salads and seafood, and a cracking cocktail list.

Or, for something more formal and a taste of one of Australia’s finest, dine at Quay a five-minute walk from the hotel. Arrive in time for sunset for one of Australia’s best views as the restaurant is housed in a contemporary glass space perched between the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Quay has become a place of pilgrimage for visitors, not least of all because it is consistently listed on the San Pellegrino Aqua Panna World's Best 50 Restaurants list. Chef Peter Gilmore creates elegant plates, and his show-stopping Snow Egg dessert has become one of the most talked about dishes in Australia.


Day 3

In the morning, take a bus, or taxi to the inner-city suburb of Darlinghurst, for breakfast at Bills cafe and enjoy Bill Granger’s famous ricotta hotcakes, or the scrambled eggs The New York Times declared the best in the world. Continue on a bus, or in a taxi, to Bondi Beach for a swim, walk, or coffee. Perhaps have lunch outdoors at North Bondi Fish, popular chef Matt Moran’s newest eatery. Do some shopping and in the afternoon have a sunset cocktail at Bucket List on the promenade, or at Icebergs Dining Room and Bar, perched above Bondi Icebergs swimming pool. Stay for dinner at Icebergs, or an alternative is Sean’s Panaroma, a uniquely Australian restaurant serving fine produce in a relaxed beachside setting.


Day 4

This morning, take an early 30-minute walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or catch the train from Circular Quay station, one stop to Milsons Point, and follow the signs to Luna Park and North Sydney Olympic Swimming Pool. Take a dip in Sydney's most historic pool which overlooks the harbour, or have a coffee at Ripples Cafe which looks across the water to the city skyline and Sydney Opera House.

Take a ferry from Milsons Point Ferry Wharf to Circular Quay, and on to Rose Bay. Here follow the signs to Sydney Seaplanes for a 30-minute journey to Berowra Waters Inn. One of the country's most iconic restaurants, it is in an intriguing location, accessible only by water. The sea plane heads along the coast line, over some of Sydney's longest beaches, and across national park bushland, arriving at Berowra Waters on the Hawkesbury River. The restaurant, designed by award-winning Australian architect Glenn Murcutt, blends with the bush surrounds. Inside, every diner has a view of the water and the bush. Chef and owner Brian Geraghty presents his own sophisticated, contemporary Australian cuisine across a four, or seven-course degustation menu. Return to Sydney on the sea plane. If you have the energy try what is said to be one of Sydney’s best cocktail bar, Bulletin Place. The bartenders are winners of international awards, the produce is bought fresh from the markets, and the spirits are top-quality.


Day 5

This morning collect a hire car and head out of town to the Blue Mountains. The 1.5-hour drive will bring you to Katoomba and the Three Sisters Lookout. Stop for lunch at the Paragon Café. Through the doors of the National Trust-registered building you’ll find simple cafe food, photos of movie stars lining the walls and under the glass counter, the same pretty boxes (retaining the original 1916 design) of handmade chocolates, still made every day on the premises. If you have an interest in contemporary art, visit the delightful Lost Bear Gallery featuring sculpture, ceramics and glasswork, as well original artworks.

Continue on to the town of Lithgow and to Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa. The resort, set on a former cattle station, is positioned between towering sandstone escarpments. The expansive 1600-hectare grounds are home to wombats, wallabies and wallaroos. The resort is considered one of the state's finest luxury food destinations, combining exemplary service, fine food and wines and just 40 luxury villas. Chef Anston Fivaz draws upon the finest ingredients from the area's artisan producers and the resort's own kitchen garden, and wines from vineyards in the New South Wales wine regions of Orange, Mudgee and the Hunter Valley. Overnight: Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa. Be sure to view the Southern night sky, and the glistening Southern Cross, before bed.


Day 6

After a leisurely breakfast, spend today in and around the resort, enjoying a swim, walk, or horse riding excursion, or relax with spa treatments.


Day 7

In the morning, drive back down through the mountains, and stop at the town of Leura, to browse in the shops for stylish souvenirs, including Josophan’s Chocolates where chocolatier Jodie Van Der Velden sells her award-winning handcrafted chocolates, including some infused with saffron, vanilla beans and rose. Return to Sydney for your departure.
